Learning story- School Age Children

Gourmet Numbers

Gourmet number is a number game that was created for school aged children, but could be modified for toddlers and preschoolers.

In this activity, children will have multiple loose parts. There is a bag full of number, children pick a number and whatever number they get they match with the amount of loose parts. Children can mix and match the loose parts until they get the total.

The older the group of children the higher the numbers can go.

Children have the opportunity to use different materials such as pompoms, pipe cleaner, buttons, bells, etc. They have the opportunity to experiment with different textures and sounds that the materials offer. Children also receive bowls and spoons to scoop and mix the materials around.

Another domain represented in this activity is Cognitive 4.12. This activity represents this domain as this activity is based on counting and numbers children have the opportunity to count. Depending on the age of the children and what class they are in, is as high the numbers can go

With this activity children develop many domains from the ELECT document. The first one being Cognitive 4.3 Representation.

This is one of the domains because like demonstrated in the images the child uses the loose parts to represent whatever number they picked from the bag.  They receive full control of what materials they want to use. They can also decorate the bowl in whatever way the want. This gives children full control which leads to open mind activities.
